Your driver meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport with a name board. You head north to the Cultural Triangle and settle into your hotel near Sigiriya. We keep the first day light after your flight.
Climb Sigiriya early, before the heat. The 5th century rock fortress rises about 200 m and has more than 1,000 steps, with the Mirror Wall and the famous frescoes on the way up. After lunch, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, another UNESCO site with painted caves and over 150 Buddha statues.
Drive south through Matale, with a stop at a spice garden to see how cinnamon, pepper and cardamom grow. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most important Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, and walk around Kandy Lake.
Board the hill country train for one of the best rail journeys in Asia. The ride takes about 7 hours through tea estates, waterfalls and mountain passes. The best views come on the last stretch from Nanu Oya to Ella. Your driver takes your luggage by road and meets you at Ella station.
Start with an easy sunrise hike up Little Adam’s Peak for views across Ella Gap. Later, walk to the Nine Arches Bridge and time your visit with a passing train. In the afternoon, visit a tea factory or Ravana Falls, or simply relax in an Ella café.
Drive down from the hills through Wellawaya to Udawalawe National Park. After lunch, head out on a private jeep safari. The park covers about 308 sq km of grassland around the Udawalawe Reservoir and is one of the most reliable places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, along with buffalo, crocodiles, peacocks and eagles.
Visit the Elephant Transit Home at feeding time. Since 1995 it has cared for orphaned baby elephants and released them back into the wild. Then drive to the south coast and spend the afternoon on Mirissa beach.
From November to April, join an early morning whale watching boat to look for blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins. The rest of the day is free for the beach, Coconut Tree Hill, snorkelling or a surf lesson in nearby Weligama.
Drive along the coast, past the stilt fishermen of Koggala, to Galle. Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort, a UNESCO site built by the Portuguese and Dutch, with its lighthouse, churches, cafés and small shops. Watch the sunset from the fort walls.
Take the Southern Expressway to Colombo. Depending on your flight time, see Galle Face Green, Gangaramaya Temple and the Lotus Tower, and pick up last souvenirs. Your driver drops you at the airport with plenty of time for your flight.

The train from Kandy to Ella takes about 7 hours, and the most scenic part is between Nanu Oya and Ella.
